The relationship between parental involvement and student achievement has been studied in a variety of contexts and samples. Generally, a positive relationship has been found between the level of parental involvement and student achievement, but this relationship has not been adequately addressed among students in special education programs. The intent of the current study was to determine the relationships between three types of parental involvement (direct parental involvement, parental communication, and parental expectations) and five areas of student achievement (reading, English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies) among students in special education programs in a county in the State of Georgia. A total of 185 subject pairs (students in special education programs and their parents) participated in this study. A parental involvement survey was administered to parents of students in special education programs in elementary schools in a Georgia county. The reading, English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies scores from the criterion-referenced competency test were then obtained for those students whose parents returned surveys. Finally, the relationships between the parental involvement scores and the achievement test scores were examined. Results indicated that all three types of parental involvement scores were positively related to achievement test scores in reading and English language arts (but not mathematics, science, or social studies), which may be due to the fact that parents of students in special education programs (unlike parents of general education students) view reading with their child as the easiest or best way to become involved in their child’s education. However, these relationships disappeared in the regression analysis when the control variables (school, student age, student gender, student race, family income, parents’ educational attainment, parent marital status, and gender of the parent) were included. Identifying the specific types of parental involvement that are related to student achievement for students in special education programs informs teachers and parents about how they can focus their involvement in a way that is most beneficial for their students. However, in the current study these relationships were not found when controlling for a variety of demographic and background factors. Future research is needed in this area to determine if parental involvement offers the same benefits for students in special education programs as it does for general education students.
